Festive Bach Sounds for the Double Anniversary at St. Markus

On October 15, 2026, Munich will celebrate the 100th birthday of conductor, organist, and harpsichordist Karl Richter and 70 years of the Tölzer Boys Choir. The anniversary concert at Markuskirche combines great sacred choral music, historical performance tradition, and the characteristic sound of organ, strings, harpsichord, and boys' choir.

An Evening Between Organ Brilliance and Choral Harmony

The evening begins with Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 for organ. After that, the motet Lobet den Herrn BWV 230 unfolds its clear polyphonic structure. With the Violin Concerto in A minor BWV 1041, David Schultheiß takes the stage as a soloist, accompanied by members of the Bavarian State Orchestra.

Historical Sound Language with Munich Influences

The program bridges Bach, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and Benjamin Britten. Mendelssohn's motets Veni Domine and Surrexit pastor bonus, as well as the sacred male choirs op. 115, meet Britten's Missa brevis in D op. 63. The orchestration and conducting reflect the sound tradition that Karl Richter established in Munich through his Bach interpretations.

High-Caliber Cast and Musical Dialogues

The Tölzer Boys Choir is under the direction of Christian Fliegner. The men's choir from the Tölzer Boys Choir ZwoZwoEins is conducted by Marco Barbon. Carlo Maria Barile takes on the organ part, while Hansjörg Albrecht plays harpsichord. Together with the solo violin and members of the Bavarian State Orchestra, a diverse concert evening emerges, featuring transparent polyphony, festive organ sound, and colorful stage performance.

Karl Richter and the Tölzer Boys Choir

Karl Richter shaped the Munich Bach tradition for decades. His performances with the Munich Bach Choir, the Munich Bach Orchestra, and outstanding soloists reached cult status and were recorded by Bavarian Radio. He also had a close musical relationship with the Tölzer Boys Choir, including performances of the St. Matthew Passion.

A Concert Experience for Classical and Choral Music Fans

The acoustics of Markuskirche allow the voices to resonate, while the organ and strings enhance the sacred sound body. Doors open at 6:45 PM, and the concert begins at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available in advance through München Ticket and at the box office.

Anyone wishing to experience Bach, romantic choral music, and historically informed sound ideas live will find a special connection of memory, musical expertise, and festive Munich concert atmosphere on this evening.
