Discoveries 6: Chamber Music between Renaissance, Classic and Cuba

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, Graham Waterhouse invites you to an extraordinary concert evening with his string trio in the Small Hall of Gasteig HP8. The sixth edition of the series Discoveries connects historical sound worlds, classical masterpieces, and a world premiere infused with Cuban temperament.

A Musical Dialogue Across Centuries

The program spans a fascinating arc from the Renaissance to the present. On the 400th anniversary of the death of English composer John Dowland, a version of the Frog’n’Toad Galliard arranged by Graham Waterhouse will be performed. Freddie Mercury will also be honored musically on the occasion of his 80th birthday: a new arrangement titled Reddy, Freddy, Rock! will make its world premiere.

Boccherini and Beethoven: Elegance Meets Symphonic Energy

Luigi Boccherini's Allegretto moderato from the string trio in B major op. 138/1 opens the evening with stylized Rococo elegance. Wilhelm Killmayer's string trio from 1984 then leads into a modern language of sound. Ludwig van Beethoven's string trio in G major op. 9/1 adds another highlight with playful, almost symphonic orchestration.

Waterhouse String Trio with Transparent Sound

Anna Kakutia on violin, Chialong Tsai on viola, and Graham Waterhouse on cello shape a clearly defined ensemble sound. The transparent instrumentation reveals every musical synchronization: fine dialogues between the instruments, precise articulation, and a lively interplay characterize the stage performance.

Cuban Colors for the Finale

The concert concludes with Graham Waterhouse's work Caprichos Cubanos, featuring nine Cuban studies for string trio. Hispanic-American, African, and Creole influences condense into an energetic and cheerful sound world. The music challenges the string trio to its limits and brings rhythmic tension, warmth, and dance-like impulses into the Small Hall.

Conclusion: A Concert Experience for Curious Ears

Discoveries 6 promises a versatile live atmosphere between chamber music, classical, new music, and surprising pop references. Anyone wishing to experience historical compositions, contemporary sound ideas, and virtuosic collaboration in a concentrated concert experience will find a special evening at Gasteig HP8.
