Jan Garbarek Group: Scandinavian Jazz with Boundless Sound Range

On Monday, October 26, 2026, the Jan Garbarek Group will transform the Isarphilharmonie in Gasteig HP8 into a resonance space for atmospheric jazz, free improvisation, and finely balanced sound colors. The concert starts at 8:00 PM and delves into the characteristic sound world of Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek.

A Saxophone Like a Bright Northern Wind

Jan Garbarek is one of the defining voices of European jazz. His clear, ascetic saxophone tone combines Scandinavian expansiveness with intense melodic concentration. In the live atmosphere of the Isarphilharmonie, lyrical lines, open harmonies, and precise synchronisation meet an acoustics that makes even the finest nuances audible.

Between ECM Jazz and World Music

Garbarek's musical journey ranges from early ECM recordings like Afric Pepperbird and Witchi-Tai-To to collaborations with Keith Jarrett and the internationally successful album Officium with the Hilliard Ensemble. His music moves between modern jazz, ambient, classical sound language, and world music. This stylistic openness also shapes the stage performance of the Jan Garbarek Group.

Improvisation with Architectural Precision

The Jan Garbarek Group thrives on the tension between spontaneous improvisation and clear musical architecture. Garbarek's soprano and tenor saxophone create bright accents while rhythm and accompaniment shape a breathing sound space. Each phrase carries weight, and every pause becomes part of the orchestration. Thus, a concert experience is created that focuses less on superficial effects and more on atmosphere, dynamics, and lasting emotion.

An Evening for Jazz Lovers and Explorers

The Isarphilharmonie provides the perfect setting for this music: concentrated sound, warm spatial effects, and a stage where even the smallest changes in volume and sound color unfold. The audience can expect not an ordinary jazz concert, but a journey through contemplative melodies, pulsating rhythms, and open soundscapes.
