When machines become sound sculptures: Art to see, hear and try out

The exhibition Fake Noise, True Image – Synergies in Art transforms the Pasinger Fabrik in Munich into an unusual laboratory for sound, movement, and visual perception. Central to the exhibition are electromechanical sound artworks created by the Munich artist duo Portmanteau, made from old, found, and recycled materials. On Friday, October 16, 2026, the exhibition will be open from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the P.ART Gallery.

Musical machines with their own character

The exhibition combines installation, sculpture, music, image, sound, language, and theater into a sensually experienceable art form. Works like Sittichquirl, Alpinium, Strippenzieher, and Singvase respond to touch, movement, and the insertion of a coin. Chairs begin to tap dance, a flock of sheep sounds, and a singing vase develops its own stage performance.

The objects function not only as exhibition pieces but also as open scores. The audience activates the mechanics themselves and experiences how rhythmic events emerge from gears, cranks, metal, wood, and everyday objects. Thus, experiencing the artworks becomes an interactive art experience for playful children from 0 to 99 years old.

Portmanteau: Between theater art, technology, and sound

Behind Portmanteau are Gerald Greulix Schrank and Christian Taison Heiß. The Munich artist duo has been working at the intersection of band projects, recording studios, stage design, and technical tinkering for over two decades. Their art combines the poetic logic of chance with the precise construction of mechanical processes. The Süddeutsche Zeitung described them as the Tinguelys of theater, thus categorizing their closeness to kinetic and playful object art.

The exhibition is complemented by parts of stage designs, photographs, prints, and cardboard comics. Contributors such as Martin Dessecker, Petr Mayr, Willi Haas, and Dr. Leonhard Scheck expand the Portmanteau cosmos with optical experiments, silk printing, etching, photography, and unusual visual spaces.

A special place for a special exhibition

The Pasinger Fabrik itself provides a significant historical resonance space. The building once housed the headquarters of the Ritterwerke, where household appliances were produced from 1912 to 1982. A work specifically developed for the location, made from hand-cranked bread slicing machines, takes up this industrial past and translates it into a humorous sound installation.

The exhibition atmosphere thrives on the contrast between industrial memory, absurd stage humor, and immediate aesthetic experience. Materials showcase their signs of use, mechanisms become visible, and every sound has a physical presence. Technology becomes poetry, recycling material becomes a sculpture, and a museum visit turns into a shared game with perception and expectation.

Cultural education through active discovery

On selected Tuesdays, the artist duo will guide through the exhibition at 6 PM and invites participants to collaboratively activate the sound sculptures. The educational series From the Sound of the Moment makes technical construction, musical composition, and artistic idea immediately comprehensible. Guided tours will take place on October 13 and 27, November 10 and 24, December 8, 2026, as well as January 12 and 26, February 16, and March 2, 2027.

In addition, music performances by Loopin’ Lab on November 6, TiDCDTrA on November 14, and Mycrotom on November 27 are announced. The exhibition thereby opens a dialogue between visual art, sound art, performance, and theater.

Conclusion: An exhibition that activates all senses

Fake Noise, True Image promises no quiet contemplation from a distance but a lively aesthetic experience full of surprising sounds, mechanical movements, and humorous visual ideas. Visitors discover art as a process, as play, and as an encounter with material. Anyone wanting to shake up Munich and bring sound sculptures to life themselves should experience this extraordinary art event live in the Pasinger Fabrik.
