Sound machines, sculptures and images: A sensual art experience in the Pasinger Fabrik
The exhibition Fake Noise, True Image – Synergies in Art transforms the Pasinger Fabrik into a poetically quirky resonance space. Visitors encounter electromechanical sound artworks by the Munich artist duo Portmanteau as well as photographs, print graphics, cardboard comics, and parts of stage sets. The viewing of the works becomes an aesthetic experience: Here, one is not only allowed to observe but also to experiment, turn, and listen.
When machines become artists
At the center are the musical sculptures of Gerald Greulix Schrank and Christian Taison Heiß, who have been working together as Portmanteau for more than twenty years. From old, found, and recycled materials, peculiar automats arise that blend installation, sound art, theater, and object art. The works Sittichquirl, Alpinium, Strippenzieher, and Singvase combine mechanics, movement, and sound into a humorous art direction beyond classic genre boundaries.
A coin sets the works in motion: Chairs begin to tap dance, a flock of sheep sounds, or a singing vase develops its own musical character. The exhibition atmosphere thrives on the interplay of noise, movement, material, and surprise. The Süddeutsche Zeitung referred to Portmanteau as the Tinguelys of the theater, thus pointing out the proximity to Jean Tinguely's kinetic machine art.
Synergies between sound, image, and space
The exhibition expands the Portmanteau cosmos to include works by friendly artists. Martin Dessecker is represented with his transparencies and visual aids. Print specialist Petr Mayr shows silkscreens, etchings, and space-consuming installations. Willi Haas brings photographic perspectives that shift familiar orders from above and below. Astrophysicist Dr. Leonhard Scheck deals with unusual cuts through spacetime in his photographs.
Thus, a showcase is created in which painting, photography, print graphics, sculpture, installation, music, and theater art interlock. The curation does not rely solely on silent contemplation, but on participation and cultural education. The audience experiences how poetic image and sound spaces arise from technical devices.
A place with industrial memory
The Pasinger Fabrik is more than just an exhibition address. The cultural center is located at the historical site of the former headquarters of Ritterwerke, where household appliances were produced from 1912 to 1982. This industrial prehistory resonates immediately in a work developed specifically for the location from hand-cranked meat slicers.
The work transforms a familiar household appliance into an unusual sound object. Those who turn the crank and insert a coin experience how usage history, mechanics, and sound converge into a performative installation. The exhibition thus appeals to playful children from 0 to 99 years old and simultaneously opens an art-historically exciting view of object art, kinetic art, and experimental music.
Guided tours and musical accompanying program
On many exhibition days, the artists themselves are present on-site, guiding through the rooms and interacting with parts of the works. Guided tours occur on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on selected dates. Additional music performances by Loopin' Lab, TiDCDTrA, and Mycrotom deepen the connection between exhibition, sound art, and live performance.
The exhibition is on view from October 9, 2026, to March 14, 2027. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission costs 8 euros, reduced 5 euros. The exhibition will be closed from December 23, 2026, to January 1, 2027.
Conclusion: Art to Hear, Touch, and Marvel
Fake Noise, True Image – Synergies in Art promises an unusual art experience full of mechanical poetry, surprising sounds, and visual discoveries. The exhibition makes aesthetic experience immediately tangible and shows how independent art arises from recycling materials, technology, and playfulness. Anyone who wants to experience art not just visually but through its spatial effect, sound, and movement should definitely visit the Pasinger Fabrik live.
