Museum Night at the Sudeten German Museum: History, Memory, and Art in Nighttime Munich
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, the Sudeten German Museum opens its doors for a special art experience during the Long Night of Munich Museums until late at night. Between 2:00 PM and 1:00 AM, exhibition, historical memory, architecture, and cultural education combine for an atmospheric examination of artworks for adults, families, and curious visitors to Munich.
The Special Exhibition in Focus
The center of attention is short tours through the special exhibition Human and Human…? The Regulated Expulsion of the Sudeten Germans. The presentation addresses the forced relocation of more than two million Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia in 1946 and examines the tension between political language, historical experience, and human fate.
The exhibition connects historical documents, personal memories, and selected exhibits into a compelling form of culture of remembrance. The question mark in the title refers to the critical engagement with the concept of an allegedly humane and human expulsion. Visitors encounter a museum presentation that links historical facts, biography, and social responsibility.
Short Tours and a Unique Exhibition Atmosphere
Starting at 6:00 PM, short tours through the special exhibition will take place every hour. The nighttime exhibition atmosphere alters the perception of light, space, and objects: Historical testimonies engage in a concentrated dialogue with the striking architecture of the museum. This provides the examination of artworks with a special calmness and intensity.
The permanent exhibition remains accessible as well. It showcases historical objects and living environments from the Bohemian countries and provides insights into culture, everyday life, migration, and memory. The curation leads from individual stories to larger historical contexts and makes the museum a place of cultural education.
Family Program with Sand Art
In the afternoon, the program is aimed at families. Sand art artist Nadia Ischia tells stories in two sand art shows at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM about dolls that accompanied children during their expulsion from Czechoslovakia. Animated images made of sand transform historical experiences into a sensory and immediately comprehensible art form.
Subsequently, workshops at light tables invite children aged six and up to experiment with sand. Family tours at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM address the topics of flight, expulsion, home, and hope in a child-friendly manner. The museum education offerings create a gentle approach to a demanding historical topic.
A Ticket for the Long Cultural Night
Participation in the evening program is only possible with a ticket for the Long Night of Munich Museums. The ticket entitles entry to all participating exhibition houses as well as the use of the MVG shuttle buses. It is valid for one adult and up to four children between four and fourteen years old. The Long Night ticket costs 20 euros plus fees.
Conclusion: A Nocturnal Art Experience with Historical Depth
The Museum Night at the Sudeten German Museum combines exhibition, culture of remembrance, architecture, and creative mediation into a versatile evening for all generations. Art enthusiasts experience a concentrated aesthetic experience, families discover history through sand art and interactive tours. Anyone wanting to experience Munich from the perspective of museum, memory, and nighttime spatial effects should definitely attend this special cultural evening live.
