Jazz, History and a Journey Across the Atlantic
The documentary TUKKI – FROM ROOTS TO BAYOU will be shown on Saturday, October 17, 2026, as part of the 16th African Film Days Munich at the Gasteig HP8. The screening begins at 8:30 PM and combines a musical journey of discovery, cultural identity, and the history of jazz into an impressive cinematic experience.
From Senegal to New Orleans
At the center is Senegalese jazz musician Alune Wade. On his journey through Senegal, Ghana, and Nigeria to New Orleans, he takes the audience on a search for musical connections between West Africa and the United States. His goal: to record the album New African Orleans with local musicians.
Music as a Living Memory
The film intertwines conversations with researchers, musicians, and cultural creators with studio recordings and live performances. Jazz does not appear as a completed chapter of music history, but as a dynamic dialogue between places, generations, and traditions. Spiritual perspectives, culinary rituals, and the art of parades expand the musical panorama.
A Documentary Sound Journey
With a runtime of 92 minutes and an atmospheric visual language, TUKKI follows the traces of rhythm, belonging, and cultural exchange. Original compositions and arrangements by Alune Wade give the documentary its own sound. The screening will take place in the original English version with English subtitles.
Aren't You Excited to Discover an Award-Winning Festival Film?
At the Africa International Film Festival 2025, TUKKI received the award for Best International Documentary. In Munich, the film is presented in cooperation with DOK.fest Munich. After the screening, a get-together with drinks, snacks, and beats invites guests to let the impressions of the evening resonate further.
