St. Martin's Parade in Munich's City Center: Lantern Light, Songs and Living Charity
When the first lanterns light up on Martin's Day at Frauenplatz, Munich's city center becomes a place of shared reflection. Families, children, and adults remember Saint Martin and his famous cloak-sharing – a faith experience about mercy, sharing, and solidarity.
Martin Play in front of Munich Cathedral
The St. Martin's Parade begins on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 4:30 PM with a Martin play at Frauenplatz in front of the main portal of the Frauenkirche. Young people from the Catholic Youth Parish of Munich and Freising will kick off the event together with the choirs of Munich Cathedral's singing school and brass players from the cathedral music.
With Lanterns Through the Old Town
Afterwards, the lantern parade leads through Löwengrube and Ettstraße to the Jesuit Church of St. Michael on Neuhauser Street. In the warm glow of the lanterns, traditional St. Martin songs echo as the spiritual community moves through Munich’s old town. A personal lantern with LED light is particularly suitable for the shared path.
Prayer and Blessing at St. Michael
At the Jesuit Church of St. Michael, the St. Martin's celebration concludes with a short festive prayer around 5 PM. Prayer, song, and the shared blessing unite the religious tradition with an open communal experience for all generations. In case of heavy rain, the Martin play and prayer will take place directly in St. Michael; the lantern parade will then be canceled.
Spiritual Significance of St. Martin's Day
Saint Martin of Tours serves as a model of lived charity. The story of the cloak-sharing invites reflection on helpfulness, compassion, and responsibility for one another. Especially for children, this religious experience becomes immediately tangible through music, lantern light, and shared movement.
Arrival and Participation
Frauenplatz is accessible from the U and S-Bahn station Marienplatz in just a few minutes on foot. Participation is free of charge and does not require registration. The St. Martin's Parade is aimed at families, children, and all people who wish to experience St. Martin's Day in an open spiritual community.
A pleasant afternoon awaits visitors with the Martin play, lantern songs, church music, and prayer. Those who want to not only hear the message of sharing but experience it together will find a special access to lived faith practice at the St. Martin's Parade in Munich's city center.
