When a village loses its future: Brachland at the Pepper Theater
A cow barn, 700 animals, and the upheavals of the turn: Brachland – A Play from Dahnsdorf tells the story of loss, new beginnings, and the fractures of German biographies on October 29, 2026, at the Pepper Theater in Munich. The focus is on Maik and his daughter Marina, who suffers from heart disease, their life paths irrevocably torn apart by the collapse of the GDR.
A turning point story between barn, family, and freedom
Shortly before 1989, Maik takes on responsibility as the deputy manager of a LPG dairy farm. The 700 cows are the pride of the village and the foundation of an entire way of life. As political and economic changes sweep over Dahnsdorf, Maik tries to save the farm. However, the banks' credit conditions set strict limits to his endeavor.
For Marina, the turning point means a different kind of salvation: her necessary heart operation is only possible in the West. Later, she moves to Munich. The production traces the life paths of father and daughter into the present and raises questions of identity, freedom, community, and respect.
Biographical theater with musical depth
Brachland is based on biographical narratives and premiered in August 2024 at a historic place: in a former LPG dairy barn in Brandenburg's Dahnsdorf. This origin shapes the dramaturgy. The real place becomes a resonance space for memories, political upheavals, and personal decisions.
Marie Golüke and Sebastian David are on stage. David expands the art of acting with violin, hang, and sounds. This creates a theatrical atmosphere where music not only accompanies but condenses memories and makes inner tensions audible. Julia Strehler is responsible for direction and script. The production comes from WENN ORTE SPRECHEN in cooperation with FESTIVAL FÜR FREUNDE E.V.
A stage design as an echo of a vanished world
The stage design refers to the agricultural past of the play and creates a sensory connection between village history and the present. Warm light, rural materials, and the concentrated acoustics of the Pepper Theater allow the former cow barn to live on as a conceptual stage space.
The production combines documentary research with poetic moments. Between concrete working life and family memory, an evening of theater opens up the question of what remains of a place when its structures disappear. It is precisely this combination of acting, sound, and biographical storytelling that gives the stage experience its special intensity.
Conclusion: History becomes present in theater
Brachland – A Play from Dahnsdorf invites the audience to a concentrated, musically shaped production about the German turn and its aftereffects. Those who experience theater as a place of personal memory, social reflection, and vibrant stage art will find an evening with sustainable resonance at the Pepper Theater.
