CARMEN – CREATURE OF PASSION: Opera material meets musical fun

On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the Theater Drehleier in Munich will transform into a passionate stage for an unusual Carmen adaptation. The performance begins at 8:00 PM, with doors opening at 6:30 PM. The ensemble led by Michael Tasche combines the famous story from Seville with musical lightness, Spanish temperament, and the playful charm of a modern musical evening.

A classic with surprising sound

Carmen stands for freedom, desire, and the destructive power of untamed passion. In this production, the classical opera material meets a deliberately playful dramaturgy: the major conflicts of the original remain intact, but the musical arrangement opens up to Spanish pop music and well-known evergreens.

Instead of a monumental opera production, the format relies on the surprising versatility of the singers and musicians. The reduction of participants creates an immediate theatre atmosphere, where acting, singing, and musical wit are closely intertwined.

Passion, jealousy, and dark humor

At the center is Carmen, whose uncompromising desire for freedom shakes the order of her surroundings. Don José succumbs to her, while the torero serves as a colorful counterfigure, escalating the tension further. Amid seduction, jealousy, and a fateful decision unfolds a stage experience that combines dramatic moments with comedic breaks.

The production tells the story with pace and a sense of popular melodies. Songs from the Gipsy Kings, Julio Iglesias, or Ricky Martin take the place of individual arias and give the well-known material a surprising presence. At the same time, central musical moments of the Carmen tradition remain intact, including Carmen's famous aria and the torero's appearance.

An evening between opera myth and entertainment

Theater Drehleier provides the right setting for this concentrated stage art. The closeness to the ensemble amplifies every audience reaction: a laugh can immediately turn into tense silence, and a musical highlight can directly resonate with the audience. Thus, a lively mix of musical, drama, and opera parody emerges.

The performance is aimed at opera lovers as well as curious theatergoers who want to experience Carmen in an accessible, humorous, and musically diverse form. The runtime is scheduled from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
