MOMO: When Time Begins to Disappear on Stage
On November 7, 2026, MOMO will celebrate its premiere at the Munich Volkstheater. Michael Ende's timeless tale about friendship, listening, and the resistance against a world of constant acceleration will be presented by the Backstageklub as an inclusive theater project on Stage 3.
A Girl Against the Gray Figures
Momo has a rare gift: she truly listens to people. When mysterious gray figures appear and convince the residents that they must save their time, life in the city changes. People become more efficient but also colder, lonelier, and more alienated. Momo sets out to reclaim what makes life worth living.
Multifaceted Production with Its Own Visual and Sound World
The direction, choreography, and set design by Rebecca Maria Fischer combine acting, movement, and visual theatrical elements. Specially composed music by Danielle Lurie meets pre-produced black-and-white videos. This blurs the line between reality and fiction as the stage is bathed in changing sound and light moods.
The gray figures don't just appear as an external threat. They also become an inner voice, a mirror of a present shaped by optimization and performance pressure. The dramaturgy thus opens a space for questions about empathy, encounter, fear, and solidarity.
Inclusive Theater as a Shared Stage Experience
In collaboration with Refugio Munich, an inclusive production is created with 19 young people aged 12 to 38. Different talents, experiences, disabilities, and perspectives shape the production. The ensemble develops a multifaceted stage world in which presence, rhythm, and shared play drive the action.
The theater atmosphere thrives on immediate encounters: from quiet listening to the powerful appearance of the gray figures, from the acoustic density created by horns, piano, celesta, and electronic sounds to the disturbing effect of strobe lights. The performance is recommended for ages 10 and up.
Michael Ende's Classic with Current Urgency
Ende's Momo is one of those works that have an impact across generations. The story speaks about time, consumption, isolation, and the question of how people want to live together. In the Munich production, it becomes a contemporary theater experience that connects imagination and social observation.
Conclusion: Time for a Theater that Resonates
MOMO invites you to a compelling stage experience: poetically, musically, visually, and socially alert. Those who want to experience how an inclusive group shapes its own stage reality from Michael Ende's classic will find an evening full of movement, sound, and human closeness. The premiere on November 7, 2026, begins at 19:00 on Stage 3 of the Munich Volkstheater.
