Bayern makes Nübel clear: No future in Munich

FC Bayern's goalkeeper planning for the coming season is set – and Alexander Nübel does not play a role in it. Sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed after the last matchday that the 29-year-old has been informed about the plans. In Munich, the trio of Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulreich, and Jonas Urbig is set to cover the position.

Goalkeeper planning at FC Bayern

Freund formulated the club's line unmistakably: “We will go into the next season with the goalkeepers we have now.” The fact that the contracts of Neuer and Ulreich have each been extended by another season further underlines the internal hierarchy. From Bayern's perspective, Urbig completes the squad spot for the future – leaving Nübel out.

Freund explicitly also referred to Nübel: “Alex will play in goal for Stuttgart against us in the DFB Cup final next week. He has had another very good season.” At the same time, he referred to the exchange with management and to the fact that Nübel knows what the plans in Munich look like. The message is thus twofold: sporting recognition for his performances – but no opening towards a Bayern comeback.

Nübel's development and loan spells

For Nübel, this is a turning point, because his development recently provided more arguments for greater responsibility than for a status as a permanent loan player. He moved to Munich on a free transfer from FC Schalke 04 in 2020, but only made a few appearances for the record champions. This was followed by loans to AS Monaco (2021 to 2023) and within the Bundesliga to VfB Stuttgart.

Logic behind Bayern's decision

This career path in particular explains the logic behind Bayern's decision: Nübel has stabilized at a high level, but never found a realistic path to the number one role in Munich – as long as Neuer is set and the club also wants to keep a reliable second goalkeeper (Ulreich) and a development option (Urbig) in the squad. For Bayern, this is less a snapshot than a strategic squad decision: risks in the key position are to be minimized, the roles clearly distributed.

Contract situation and fundamental question

Added to this is Nübel's contract situation: his contract with FC Bayern runs until 2030. This shifts the debate away from short-term squad logistics to a fundamental question: How long can a goalkeeper in his prime be managed on a loan basis without creating a permanent conflict of interest between club interests and player career?

Impact on VfB Stuttgart

For VfB Stuttgart, Bayern's clarity is initially relevant above all in sporting terms. Nübel is to be in goal in the DFB Cup final, and he also reached the Champions League with VfB on the last matchday – further proof of his importance as a key player in a successful season.

Future prospects

It remains open what a solution beyond the loan arrangement might look like. In the context of the personnel issue, the question arises as to whether Stuttgart could even afford a permanent signing given possible transfer and salary dimensions within its own financial limits. At the same time, Dennis Seimen is also being discussed in Stuttgart as a name for the future; the 20-year-old is currently on loan at SC Paderborn.

Outlook for Nübel

From Bayern's perspective, however, the core point has already been decided: the club is planning in goal without Nübel – and has clearly communicated this to him according to Freund. For the player, the situation in Munich is thus clarified, but not the crucial follow-up question: Where and under what conditions can he secure his role as number one in the long term if the path at FC Bayern remains permanently blocked?
