The Melancholy of John Dowland Fills the Imperial Hall

On Friday, October 23, 2026, the Residence Week Munich takes you into the sonorous world of the English late Renaissance. In the Imperial Hall of the Residence, Andreas Scholl, the Stylus Phantasticus Consort, Evangelina Mascardi, and Friederike Heumann will dedicate a concert to the composer John Dowland on the occasion of his 400th death anniversary.

Between Longing and Transience

Dowland's music lives from a painful beauty, where unfulfilled love, lost happiness, and the awareness of transience intertwine. His elaborate songs unfold an intimate live atmosphere in the historical Imperial Hall, carried by the clear heights of the countertenor and the warm, rich timbres of historical instruments.

Renaissance Lute and Viola da Gamba

At the center are selected works from Dowland's First Booke of Songes or Ayres, published in 1597. The vocal lines encounter the delicate plucking of the Renaissance lute and the velvety foundation of a viola da gamba consort. Precise synchronization, sensitive articulation, and historically informed stage performance make the musical language of the late Renaissance immediately palpable.

Countertenor Star Andreas Scholl

Andreas Scholl is among the internationally renowned countertenors. The Grammy-nominated singer has received, among others, the ECHO Klassik, the Gramophone Award, and the Edison Award. On stage, he combines vocal agility with exceptional expressiveness, transforming Dowland's melancholic miniatures into concentrated soundscapes.
