When Machines Become Sound Sculptures
The exhibition Fake Noise, True Image – Synergies in Art transforms the Pasinger Fabrik into an unusual resonance space between visual art, music, theater, and technology. On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, visitors will experience electromechanical sound artworks by the Munich artist duo Portmanteau from 3 PM to 7 PM.
Art to Touch, Hear, and Marvel
At the center are strange music machines created from old, found, or recycled materials. Automatons like Sittichquirl, Alpinium, Strippenzieher, Singvase, and Grobian combine sculpture, mechanics, and sound into a playful installation. Through coin insertion, button pressing, or cranking, visitors set the works in motion themselves.
Chairs begin to tap dance, a flock of sheep sounds off, and a singing vase develops its own humorous form of indulgence. The exhibition thus appeals to the eye, ear, and belly, offering an immediate art experience for playful children from 0 to 99 years old.
Portmanteau and the Aesthetics of the Machine
Behind Portmanteau are Gerald Greulix Schrank and Christian Taison Heiß. This duo, active for more than twenty years, works at the intersection of band project, recording studio, theater, and technical tinkering. Süddeutsche Zeitung described Portmanteau as the Tinguelys of theater – a historically accurate connection to kinetic art and the tradition of the quirky machine object.
The exhibition connects this mechanical fantasy with a versatile showcase. In addition to sound machines, parts of stage sets, photographs, prints, and cardboard comics are on display. Martin Dessecker contributes his transparencies and visual aids, Petr Mayr presents screen prints, etchings, and spatial installations. Willi Haas examines photographic orientation in images, while astrophysicist Dr. Leonhard Scheck works with unusual cuts through space-time.
A Place with Industrial Memory
The spatial effect of the exhibition receives a special resonance from the history of the Pasinger Fabrik. Where art, theater, and cultural education take place today, once stood the headquarters of Ritterwerke, where household appliances were produced from 1912 to 1982. A site-specific work created from hand-cranked meat slicers references this industrial past and translates it into a humorous sound installation.
Artwork Observation and Cultural Education
On many days, the artists themselves are present, guiding visitors through the spaces and interacting with individual works. This creates a direct connection between curation, production, and reception. The aesthetic experience is not limited to distant observation but becomes an experimental encounter with material, movement, light, sound, and space.
The exhibition runs from October 9, 2026, to March 14, 2027. Public tours take place on Tuesdays at 6 PM on selected dates. Accompanying music performances expand the interplay of installation and live sound.
Conclusion: An Exhibition You Have to Trigger Yourself
Fake Noise, True Image does not greet its guests with silent contemplation but with a lively observation of works full of mechanical surprises. Those who wish to experience kinetic art, sound art, recycled materials, and humorous stage aesthetics should definitely visit the Pasinger Fabrik live and coax sounds from the machines themselves.
