When kindness becomes a challenge: The Good Person of Szechwan in Munich
The Free Stage Munich brings Bertolt Brecht's significant parable The Good Person of Szechwan to the Wagenhalle of the Pasinger Fabrik on October 9, 2026. In the direction of Sascha Fersch, acting, choir, dance, video projections, and specially composed music merge into a compelling stage experience about humanity, responsibility, and the limits of good.
Brecht's parable about humanity and power
At the center is Shen Te, who is chosen by the gods as a good person. But her willingness to help is ruthlessly exploited in a world dominated by self-interest. To survive, she creates her second self: the unscrupulous businessman Shui Ta. Brecht's epic theater thus poses an uncomfortable question in the spotlight of the stage: How does a person remain good when societal conditions punish kindness?
An inclusive production with poetic power
The Free Stage Munich works with a mixed-abled ensemble of artists with and without disabilities. This artistic constellation expands the dramaturgy to include perspectives on discrimination, participation, and accessibility. Direction and music are by Sascha Fersch, and the set design is by Marie Jaksch. The stage design, the video projections, and the musical layer combine to create an atmospherically dense theater aesthetic.
Acting, choir, dance, and projection
The acting skills of the ensemble encounter choreographed movements, choral moments, and visual transitions. Light, sound, and video form a stage space where Shen Te's inner conflict is directly reflected. The production presents Brecht's classic not as a museum piece of literary theater, but as contemporary stage art with physical presence and clear social tension.
A focused theater evening at the Pasinger Fabrik
The performance lasts about 90 minutes and takes place without intermission. All performances will be captioned. The Pasinger Fabrik, with its Wagenhalle, offers a characterful venue for this intense theater experience. A performance with sign language interpretation is scheduled for October 10, 2026.
This stage experience combines Brecht's socially critical dramaturgy with inclusive theater work, modern music, and a multi-faceted visual staging. Those who experience theater as a place of encounter, of political questions, and of sensory experience will find an evening with lasting audience impact in The Good Person of Szechwan.
