Philophobia: Intergalactic Cruising in the Dark Forest

A forest, a campfire, and a fateful community of humans, aliens, vampires, and cyborgs: Heiki Riipinen's world premiere Philophobia transforms stage 2 of the Munich Volkstheater into a poetic experiential space about love, loneliness, and the fear of intimacy.

A Forest as a Soul Landscape

Luise retreats with her tent into the Black Forest to contemplate her relationship. What does togetherness mean when it tips into dependency and control? Faust offers his help while Eros and Tanna, as extraterrestrial seekers, a vampire and a cyborg, wander through the nocturnal stage forest. The dramaturgy combines science fiction, cruising, and fairy-tale fantasy into an unusual narrative about the need for connection.

A Staging Between Desire and Strangeness

Director and performance artist Heiki Riipinen develops the piece together with the ensemble. The staging does not center on a single worldview but rather on the space between the characters: the uncertain moment when encounters become possible. This creates a soft alternative to the hardness of the outside world, where strangeness appears not as a threat but as an invitation.

Set Design, Costumes, and Immediate Theater Atmosphere

Liam Monzer Alzafari's set design and costumes create a sensual fantasy world that is supported by Niko Ursin's music and Anja Sekulic's lighting design. The audience sits on carpets, bean bags, or chairs and is even allowed to take off their shoes. This special seating situation dissolves the classical distance between the auditorium and the stage, making the theatrical experience physically immediate.

A Premiere with Strong Themes

Philophobia questions whether fears of encounters and love can be transformed. Nudity and the verbal negotiation of explicit sexual acts are among the indications of the production. The performance lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes without an intermission. An introduction by the production dramaturgy begins on the day of the event at 7:30 PM on stage 3.

Conclusion: A Theater Evening for the In-Between Spaces

This stage experience leads into a strange, tender, and simultaneously unpredictable world. Those seeking contemporary acting, performative forms, and an unusual theatrical atmosphere will experience with Philophobia a world premiere about the longing for intimacy.
